Changing Skype username
Yesterday I changed my Skype username from lysander1983 to martin.metzmacher. Skype was one of the last domains (MSN still is, but I might just not bother with the one…it’s gonna die anyway) in which I was still “Lysander” and not “Martin”. I see this move from a synonym to “the real person” in a broader perspective, with two main points.
1. The Internet is becoming “real”. Real persons talk to other real persons.
2. I’m growing up. I used to think…oh no…I better not put my name out there – I might regret that one day. Now I think more like: Oh..let’s put my name out there or I might regret it one day.
I think it is a development that will continue. I hope that in a while everyone will be real – online and offline. Greetings to Herr X and Maeh Maeh – I still like you!

I read this in the really cool ebook “What matters now” by Seth Godin. Lot’s of different authors talk in it about what they think is the core of the change all around us right now. John Wood talks about the Ripple effect of education. He closes his text with this ingenious saying:
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago.
The second best time is now.
Wow… I am totally blown away by the beauty of this metaphor.
