Skype not working on Windows 7 64bit

Go here to read about the solution for your Skype problem (read 2nd comment)

I am sick of it! And i love it! – No really I do!

I have a love-hate relationship with Skype.

I love Skype

  • Great codec
  • Works out of the box
  • Works on Windows, Mac & Linux
  • lot’s of people have it
  • it’s free
  • it’s on the iPhone
  • works with 3G connection (sometimes)
  • now has video conference calls (beta)

I hate Skype

  • not actually ¬†“lightweight”¬†program¬†– rather a 200kg fatty
  • the user interface is bad – no it’s worse than bad
  • popup – popup – popup: DON’T BUG ME!
  • Some calls are much more expensive than via voip
  • But the worst thing of all:
    • Oh boy! I have that screen
    • Skype is totally useless on Windows 7, 64bit
    • I have tried to install it on 3 different computers. Everytime it’s the same:
    • Sometimes it starts working, and then again crashed for a whole week.

@Skype: YOU NEED TO FIX THIS! It’s driving me and lot’s of other people mad. Just try a search on Google. It’s not handy to give such bad customer support. Windows 7 has been out quite a while now. You need to fix this or we’ll all be gone (and use Google Talk or iChat).

I had the same problem for a while. I’m currently running version 5.1 skype and I’ve gone into program files and have right clicked on the program and ‘run as administrator’ and it’s worked for me. I hope this helps some/all of you.

I also got the same problem today, at about the same time as Techie posted his message. There mite be some sort of bugs, and hopefully skype will fix itself automatically. We will just wait and see.

  • Ana:

    Try with this

    I could fix it.

1.Click Start, type run and press Enter. (On Windows XP: Click Start and then Run.)
2.Type the following and click OK.

3.Locate and delete the file shared.xml.
4.If you cannot find this file: 1.Click Start, type run and press Enter. (On Windows XP: Click Start and then Run.)
2.Type the following and click OK.

    control folders
3.In the View tab, ensure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled.
    4.Repeat steps 1-3.

Just stopped working for me today. I had two accounts open and left the computer for a while. When I got back they were both crashed, the domain was not opening (just this one) and… skype wouldn’t start, giving that same error…

  • tycho:

same thing for me, just doesnt work;s since 5.3

  • zeddock:

    Me too.
    Just started recently.

Was hitting error on 5.3… completely uninstalled and reinstalled… still stops.

Then went to beta 5.5… same thing!
