[SOLUTION] Skype has stopped working Windows 7 64 bit #fail

Update: Try this to fix Skype
———-
Dear Skype,

a while ago I wrote a blog post titled Skype not working on windows 7 64 bit. Since then 3 comments have stated the same problem – and I have still found no answer to the problem. In addition to that I would like to show you some related search terms from last month that complete the picture. I have removed the search terms that relate to Skype in a different sense (than: “It’s broken!”).

Please Skype. Fix Skype for Windows 7 64 bit!

Hey guys I had this problem windows 7 64 bit, it would crash after about 5 seconds when all my contacts loaded. deleting the xml didnt work.
i was running iz3d at the time
    (driver makes games 3d)
anyway when i exited that and deleted the xml it then worked.
you guys may want to exit any programs or things you got running similar to mine.

  • Leslie:

MIne also worked, thanks for the help!!!

  • AjTeX:

I have a slightly different issue. I have tried all of the above mentioned….nothing works. I even uninstalled all registry traces etc. etc. No trace of Skype left on laptop. Running Win 7 64bit. All worked perfectly before. Only when I downloaded the latest ver of Skype 5.10.0.116 and tried to install… it doesn’t even laod the correct install popups. It takes less than 8 sec and it gives a shortcut icon on desktop and when I try to open it, gives error “Windows cannot find ‘C:Program Files (x86)SkypePhoneSkype.exe. Make sure you typed the name correrctly, and then try again” It’s realy bugging me now … I can’t find a solution!!! Please anyone with similar problem???

  • Ashwini:

I tried all of the above solutions and nothing worked. I still get the same error

  • gouthami:

  • Paco:

FOR THOSE WHO EVA’S SOLUTION HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM:

Besides deleting the so mentioned .xml file do the following:

    1) Right click on Skype shortcut, then go to “Properties”
    2) Now select “Compatibility” tab
    3) Then check the “Run this program as an administrator” box
    4) Click “OK”
    5) Open Skype

    Now you are back baby!

  • Dua:

i am using windows 7. i ve tried deleting shared.xml but it didnt work then i delete whole folder of skype from roaming n shared data..it didnt work too…
then i run skype with compatibilty mode windows XP with SP2 and it worked. you can try it.. just right click on skype icon. click on properties and then in compatibility tab click on the check box which says run this program in compatibility mode windows XP ,SP2

  • Jayasimha:

I deleted the Shared.XML file and restarted the system. It is not working for me. I tried reinstalling SKype too.

  • Rahul:

Hey ….amazing..it really works…OMG i wasted my days on this ..
    Thank you so much 1

  • Tengson:

@Daniel: I am using Windows 7×64 bit with Skype 5.5 but it didn’t work. After I log on it prompt “Skype has been stop working……”. Even I try to update to 5.8 or downgrade to 5.3 which has many answer to delete share.xml but it remains doesn’t work. How do you restore older version? Has anyone can help? I really appreciate for your hand?

    Thanks,
    Tengson.

  • None of the above worked for me. But I tried this and it worked.

-Close Skype and then right click on the skype shortcut on your desktop.

    -Click on “restore previous versions”

    -Then select an older version.

I tried this and it worked right away. You will not loose any contacts or anything else important.

  • Adi:

I downloaded Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows free which is now available and it is working. I don’t have a Skype icon anymore, just a blank document icon which shows my status on Skype.

  • Tony:

My wife and I have similar Toshibas (L675 – less than a year old). She uses skype, I dont (I like it but it always buggers up machines!), so I dont know what ver is running on my machine. My wife downloaded the latest version many times. I’ve likewise uninstalled the program several times, removed every downloaded file stored in downloads, deleted anything that smells of skype in regedit, I’ve used %appdata%skype and deleted shared xml files and also gone through folders deleting as many temp- files as I can find. Skype then worked, connected to the friend for about 30 seconds and then stopped working again. All this encourages me I’m right to ignore skype but that doesn’t satisfy her as she’s now using my machine which I don’t want screwed up by skype. How do I resolve the problem on her machine?

  • Matt:

I tried deleting the Shared.xml file, and this seemed to work, except now EACH time i start skype, I have to delete that file before I start it, or else it wont work. does anyone have a more permanent solution?

  • ben reynolds:

Deleteing shared.xml worked for me using Skype 5.5 on Win 7 64 bit.
    Thanks!

  • Michael M:

none the less with 5.5 Eva’s advice works. thank you

  • Ben:

Eva’s fix worked for me only once. When I rebooted my PC I started getting the error again. Because the XML file rewrites itself every time you start Skype, I tried deleting it again but it didn’t work. I checked my anti-virus settings to make sure that Skype wasn’t being blocked and by adjusting my settings in Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, I fixed it. If you have Kaspersky, try:

    -Settings,
    –click on little brown box
    —Threats and Exclusions
    —-Trusted Applications Settings
    —–Trusted applications Tab “Add”
——”Applications” and then browse down for “Skype” and “add”

    I hope this helps

  • Sage Halostar:

Had the same message…Skype has stopped working…and then Windows trying to find a solution to the issue. All to no avail of course. I run Windows 7 64 bit and the 5.5 version of skype.

I tried all of the fixes. I tried the one mentioned above, others were getting flash uninstalled..reinstalled, uninstallin/reinstalling Skype, clearing all browser caches. I tried of course to start Skype in between each attempt so I could isolate what action would help. In the end none worked and then I got a strange error message. A Disk I/0 error. I looked up the solution for that since at this point I had nothing to lose…right?

    https://support.skype.com/en-us/faq/FA10143/Why-do-I-get-a-Disk-I-O-error-when-I-try-to-sign-in-to-Skype

The answer for me was through Skype and it worked. So if all else fails, perhaps this one might be of help to you. It mentions on the page, that the error message only appears ‘sometimes’ so I figure maybe this has been the issue all along.

  • Nast:

it worked for me! thanks everyone!

  • Aditi:

Dear Eva, Do we have to restart the program or something after it’s done???

Skype would only update on reinstall to Version 5.3, yet later versions are mentioned here:

For windows 7, you have to turn off the compatibility mode with previous version of Windows on the Skype shortcut properties! When you launch it again, it will work like a charm.
Right click on Skype Icon>> go to properties >> click compatibility Tab >> Check the box :” Run this program in Compatibility mode for:” then from section box , choose “window 7″

I have fixed my Skype. I couldn’t find the file shared.xml last time because it is hidded file. Needed to change my TotalCommander / Options / Display + check Show Hidden Files. Then I found it and deleted. Now Skype works.

  • dal:

I have WinXP_Home_SP3, when Skype stopped to work (26.5.2011) I have uninstalled it. Today I have installed it again but the error is still not fixed. When I start the Skype, I can see the initial form where you should enter username/password but after about 2 seconds (before I hit any key) there appears the dialog saying the application has crashed. I tried to find the file shared.xml but it doesn’t exist anywhere on my PC. Also tried to delete all internet-temporary files. Any other ideas ?

  • Andy:

The trick Eva mentioned worked like a charm!

For people who did not get Skype to work yet, you have to mix it with ZeroKoll’s solution!

So your steps to do are:
    1) Delete Shared.xml
    2) Turn off compatibility mode.

After those two exact steps my skype worked again :)

I started getting this message and I reinstalled skype and did the xml deleting but it didnt help.
Maybe it has to do with microsoft? D:

Update: besides deleting the mentioned xml file I also had to change the program’s shortcut to “run as administrator” – truly annoying, but it did the trick for me.

  • Martin Metzmacher:

Hi Tony – I know the feeling. Non of the standard fixes seem to apply to my specific situation. Maybe it has to do with your specific combination of hardware and hardware (my hunch: sound driver problems).

  • Tony:

This is insane, i deleted the .xml file and its not working… I reinstalled a bizilions of times Skype and its still not working.

  • Dennis:

Hi Eva, worked for me also! thanks

    Hi Eva,
I have tried a different version of what seem to be a similar fix
I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and its fixed the issue

    1.Type %appdata%skype and click OK.
    2.Delete the shared.xml file.
3.Restart Skype. The shared.xml file will be recreated.

thanks for the trick – sadly it did not work for me ):

  • Eva:

    Type this C:Users%username%AppDataRoamingSkype
Into your C drive. Not in the search bar. Delete the XML file called Shared and it works!
