iPhone: online 7/11
Learning what it means to be online all the time
I have had my iPhone for a while now. One thing I discovered is that it has some kind of profound influence when I am online all the time. For example, the meebo apps allow me to manage everything: my ICQ, MSN, facebook account. Thus I get a lot of notifications in my iPhone.
Lesson learned
Everyone saw that I am always online. They message me and I don’t reply because I thought it will show when I’m not there. I also thought that after some time, the status will revert to offline. However, that was actually not the case. I did communicate to other people, but I frustrated some people whom I was unable to reply to.
I have learned my lesson. I will only put the add-on if I’ m really available on the iPhone. That was a good learning experience for me, because that taught me that it’s probably not a good idea to be online all the time in a synchronous media. People expect you to react.
Twitter is so easy to use as a messenger, but it’s a lot like email where people can see if I’m online or not. I don’t have to worry about updating my status because there is none in Twitter. The same is not true with other applications, like G-talk, where I put a status a week ago and forgot to change it, and it doesn’t fit to my current status anymore. So that’s what I really like about twitter.
iPhone controls my attention
When I have the iphone next to me, and when I get an email, it makes a glaring sound. When I’m busy working at the computer, this allows me to know that I’ve got an email without having my email open. One ring actually puts the mail, and everyone else who comes from the outside, in control of my attention. I’m just wondering if I wanna do this. I’m thinking in a couple of weeks, I’ll try to see what the opposite does. I’ll put out all notifications and go back to checking my mail twice a day. I’ll see what that does and if that is easier.
I definitely think that we need to find a good balance between being available and not being available. I think having access online now everywhere is a blessing, but it can also be curse. This is something we saw when the mobile phone came up; that you’re always accessible, and that the physical boundaries are replaced with boundaries that you as an individual need to guard on your own.
