How to make the perfect SEO links

Links connect ideas

Why are links so important? Well, they are so important because they give meaning to all the content that is in the internet. The internet is an enormous space of content but it would be useless unless we have a good way of structuring the content and of showing what the relationship between the different pieces of content is. There’s where links come into play. So a link basically makes a connection from one piece of content to another piece of content. This relationship is of a semantic quality. What does that mean? That means that this relationship is defined by the words of the link and of the link title.

How things get meaning

So how do people learn meaning? Well when you are young, you learn meaning because you connect different words to different objects and activities. For example, if you have an apple and you point to it and you say blab la bla, your parents might say, that is right sweetie, that is an apple. In that way, you get to connect a meaning, a semantic meaning to an object.

Well links basically work the same, but who are we teaching? It’s Google. Think of Google as a child who wants to know what everything around him is about. And making a link which says for example, very good winery, you teach Google that this site, for example winery.com, is a site that you consider to be a good winery. So Google actually learns what you think this object in this case site, is, which is a good winery.

Google is learning

However, Google learns this for a lot of links, and not only for your links but also for everyone’s links. So some people might consider a specific page for example, might think this is a bad winery. Well, if this is a bad winery for a lot of people, and you’re the only one linking to it as a very good winery, Google might assume that you’re just wrong. So this is how Google learns what a website is. And this will also influence your search results. So if a lot of people link to you with a specific name in the link, and in the title of the link, Google will assume that your site is about that.

Use the right anchor text

For example, I have a product that I offer is search engine optimization for WordPress blogs. So whenever I can, and people link to my site, I ask them to link to my site by using the name good WordPress SEO and Internet Marketing, because that is what I want Google to know what I’m all about. And this in case will help me also to rate better for these words. When lots of people link to me with WordPress SEO, I will get higher in the rankings in Google for the term SEO.

So your link should always include a semantic meaning. This also tells you that it doesn’t make sense to link and call that link click here or read more.  Think of it like talking to a child. You might tell the child look there, but it will be better for the child, in order to learn language, if you tell it, look at that apple. So the child can connect the word apple to that object.

And that’s what you should do with all your links in your site. Make it a meaningful text that you link from. Also put a meaningful title text in your link, that should be pretty much the same as the actual anchor text. And then also keep your link text consistent all over your site. This becomes even easier if you have predefined SEO keywords for every page on your website.
